Making the most of ClickBank, Click2Sell and other Affiliate Programs

There are a lot of people (and I mean a LOT!) who have tried their hand at online marketing only to end up losing more money than they made. Many took the advice of others that affiliate marketing is the way to go, because you don’t need your own product, don’t necessarily need a website, it is somebody else’s responsibility to fulfil the orders, and you get a nice commission from each sale. If it’s a Clickbank product, the commission can be as high as 75%.
In a nutshell it sounds ideal. You get paid more than half of the purchase price and all you have to do is get people to visit the sales page to buy the product.Unfortunately, that’s where the bubble bursts. Getting people to the sales page is not quite as easy as the professionals make out. If you don’t have a website, the only effective methods of driving traffic to sales pages are paid advertisements such as Google AdWords. You could try article marketing, but most article directories don’t accept affiliate links in articles that you submit.
If you do have a website or blog, you could try posting reviews of the product that you’re trying to sell, but then you have to get traffic to your website or blog. That can be a lot easier if you know about SEO and Pinging etc.
Other possibilities are the social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. You can buy adverts on Facebook and be very specific about your target audience. You can tweet a message to your Twitter followers, but if your followers in turn follow many other people, then your messages can get lost in the sea of tweets that pass through.
So what is the answer to success in Affiliate Marketing? Strangely enough, it involves looking at it from the opposite direction. In other words, make a product of your own and get other people to sell it for you as affiliates.
Ah! But that’s why you became an affiliate – so that you didn’t need your own product. Well, let me tell you, as somebody who has been there – You Need Your Own Product!
It doesn’t have to be a ground-breaking product – just something that is useful to a lot of people and relatively low cost so that they don’t think twice about buying it. It also has to be something that fits in with the niche that you are working in.
Here’s the action plan:
- Get your own product. Use something PLR as a basis to get started, and add value to it. Rewrite sections of it and add more detail where you can.
- Submit your product to Clickbank so that other people can sell it for you.
- Promote the product to affiliates in forums etc.
- Recruit as many affiliates as you can to promote your product.
- Build a list of buyers.
That’s the secret. The list. You’ve heard countless times that the money is in the list. Well if you have a list of people who have bought a particular product, then you know what kind of product they are interested in. You can now promote other, related products to the people on your list.
A word of warning:
Once you have built your list, don’t start flooding them with affiliate links – they’ll unsubscribe very quickly. Build up a rapport with them. Send them related information in emails a couple of times a week, and then from time-to-time, drop in the odd recommended product. If you have gained their trust, they are more likely to buy through your link.
I would say no more than one recommended product per month to begin with until you get a feel for how much you can get away with. And the best way to recommend a product is to discuss a problem that people might experience within the target niche and then suggest the product as a solution.
Once you have established your list, make another product and build another list and start the process over again. Eventually, you will have enough active list members to bring you a decent income. And by the time that happens, you will be so confident about making products, you’ll be able to do it without even thinking about it.
More about making products in my next post. It’s not difficult. Really!

At the time of writing there are about 1.25 million people registered with ClickBank. But of those, only around 100,000 are actively promoting and selling products from the ClickBank Marketplace. That amounts to just 8% of registered affiliates.
If ClickBank is so good, what is going wrong?
The biggest problem is ClickBank’s Accounting Policy which makes it difficult for beginners to receive the initial commissions they have earned. It is the result of this policy that so many ClickBank affiliates have become completely disillusioned and just given up.
ClickBank, of course, are not concerned by this. When accounts go dormant for extended periods, they start to deduct administration charges from them until any balance has disappeared. And there are plenty more news affiliates where they came from, and there are also many thousands of successful affiliates who are bringing ClickBank a nice income.
An Alternative
There is an alternative to ClickBank. It operates in a similar way – acting as a mediator between vendor and affiliate – but their accounting policy is not as strict.
The company is Click2Sell. They offer very similar features to ClickBank, but with some marked differences.
- It costs nothing to register, whether as an affiliate or a vendor
- Vendors can sell unlimited products from one account
- Affiliates DO NOT have to sell to 5 different customers before receiving their commissions.
- Multiple Payment methods – Paypal, Moneybookers, Authorize.net, Worldpay or Google Checkout
- Payment to vendors is immediate – no waiting for checks in the post
- Payment can be made to affiliates by PayPal – immediate transfer – no waiting for checks
- Products can be Digital, Physical or Subscription based
- Powerful tracking features available as standard
- No waiting for product approval
- Products can be sold in US Dollars, GB Pounds or Euros
I tend to think of it as “ClickBank without the grief”. Affiliates don’t have to worry about whether their account will go dormant or not, or whether they will meet the sales criteria. They make a sale – they get their commission.
If you’ve been hit by ClickBank’s Accounting Policy, why not give Click2Sell a try. It’s free – you have nothing to lose, and commissions to gain.

In the Clickbank Affiliate marketing world, the big buzz has to be ClickBank Pirate.
The strapline for Clickbank Pirate is “Clickbank Pirate – Pillage & Plunder Clickbank for Autopilot Income”. So what is it all about, and is it really an easy way to make money, or is it another one of those guru scams that only tells you part of the story?
What is Clickbank Pirate?
Clickbank Pirate is a system created by two masters of Affiliate marketing, Soren Jordansen & Cindy Battye, which anyone can lock into and get set up with almost no effort on their part. It centres around selling Clickbank products as affiliates, using professional marketing techniques that have been fully automated.Although becoming a Clickbank affiliate is incredibly easy, actually getting those sales is a different matter. Anyone new to online marketing will hit their first stumbling blocks almost immediately after they have signed up with Clickbank. It’s all very well being an affiliate, but it doesn’t automatically make you a salesman or a webmaster. If you have no clue about how to make a squeeze page (or even what one is!), or why you need an Autoresponder, you’re in trouble.
This is where ClickBank Pirate comes in. The system does all that stuff for you. Not only that, by providing these items it can save you a huge amount of money, which is excellent if you’re starting up with very little capital.
Clickbank pirate does all these things for you:
- Selling the product using professionally written pre-sell squeeze pages
- Provides all the web pages you need, so you don’t need to learn HTML or buy fancy web design software
- Eliminates the need for web hosting (saves you at least $10 per month)
- Eliminates the need for a web domain (saves you $10 per year)
- Eliminates the need for an Autoresponder (saves you $20 per month)
- Provides excellent incentives in the form of free, branded reports to encourage visitors to sign up on the squeeze pages. The reports are branded with YOUR affiliate links
- Provides copy-and-paste marketing tools, including blog posts, emails, text ads, banner ads etc
- Provides an autoresponder series which promotes further, related Clickbank products to your buyers
- With this system you don’t need to do any of the following:
- Write ebooks
- Rebrand ebooks
- Keep a blog updated
- Write any emails
- Write and maintain an autoresponder series
It’s all done for you.
There’s No Such Thing as a Free Lunch
There must be a catch. Surely they are not going to let you sign up to their system, do all the work and let you reap all the benefits are they? No. And there’s the rub. There is still one major task that you have to do to for the system to work. Many reviews of ClickBank Pirate tend to gloss over this one as if it’s hardly important, but the truth is that it is probably the most important part of any kind of marketing campaign.
You have to drive traffic to the system.
Without traffic, no marketing system is ever going to make you any money.Basically, once you have signed up for the system, and set up your details, you have at least 5 fully-loaded marketing campaigns set up for you, complete with squeeze-pages, autoresponder and affiliate links to the sales pages.
You need to funnel traffic towards any one of those squeeze pages. It’s no different to any other marketing campaign that you might set up, it’s just that all the technology bits and the sales copy writing bits are done for you.
The system does provide you with professionally designed and written emails, blog posts, text ads and banner ads, which makes this task a lot easier. Their training area also provides some good information about getting traffic.
But what you must understand is that Clickbank Pirate is not a Set-It-and-Forget-It system. If you don’t drive the traffic, you don’t get the sales.
Conclusion
If you’re a beginner and are bogged down by the mysteries of hosting, domains, squeeze pages and autoresponders, ClickBank Pirate is an excellent way to get started. 95% of the technical work is done for you – all you have to do is promote your links. You could spend weeks or months learning about setting up squeeze pages and autoresponders and still not get it right. Even if you do, you still have to get the traffic to your pages.
Or, you could let somebody else do all the technical work for you and spend your time learning about driving traffic. You can get traffic to your site within minutes using some of the easiest techniques. Would you rather concentrate on driving traffic and making sales within the first few days, or never get started because you couldn’t get the infrastructure set up?
If you already have some online marketing experience and you’re already good at driving traffic, but can’t be bothered to hunt around for the best products to market, ClickBank Pirate is good for you, too.
And if you don’t like it, you can get your money back within the first 2 months.

ClickBank is an ecommerce system that allows vendors to sell their digital products over the Internet with ease. Clickbank handles the credit card processing for the vendor, and ensures that the buyer is taken to the product download page after the purchase has been completed.
Because all products sold via ClickBank must be digital, they always work on a two-page system; a sales page and a download page.Affiliates
What Clickbank is most famous for is its affiliate system. Marketers can sign up as an affiliate and promote any of the thousands of products in the ClickBank Marketplace. In return, they receive a commission from every sale that is made as a result of their referrals. ClickBank handle all the order processing and allocate the relevant commission to the affiliate.
Signing up is free. If you’re itching to get started, you can sign up with ClickBank here.Commissions
Commissions on products vary, but they may be as high as 75% of the sale price. This might seem like a lot to pay your sales people, but using an affiliate program could result in several thousand sales of a product compared with a handful of sales made on your own.
When a sale is made, ClickBank automatically divide the payment up:
They deduct their own service charge
The remaining amount is divided up according to the commission rate specified, between the vendor and the affiliate.Note that payments to vendors and affiliates are delayed due to the refund policy. If a customer decides they want a refund for the product, obviously no commission is paid out on that sale.
The ClickBank Marketplace
When a vendor sells a product through ClickBank, it is automatically added to the ClickBank Marketplace. At the time of writing there are over 6,000 products in the ClickBank Marketplace (many people quote more than 10,000, but the Marketplace contains a lot of duplicates because the vendors file them under more than one category).
As an Affiliate, you are free to select and market any of the products in the ClickBank Marketplace. All you need to do is to generate the necessary Hoplink and you are ready to go.Hoplinks
Hoplinks are your key to making money on the Internet using ClickBank.
Hoplinks all have the same format so you can create them yourself if you know the Vendor Nickname. However, when you find the product in the ClickBank Marketplace, as long as you are logged in, ClickBank will generate the Hoplink for you. All you have to do is copy it and paste it wherever you want to promote the product.
Hoplinks look like this:
http://AFFILIATE_NICKNAME.VENDOR_NICKAME.hop.clickbank.net
So if your Nickname is “johndoe” and you want to sell a product from the vendor “foobar”, the hoplink would be
http://foobar.johndoe.hop.clickbank.net
So, that’s ClickBank in a nutshell. It couldn’t be simpler. If you want an easy way in to online marketing, you could do worse than starting with ClickBank. To get started, sign up with ClickBank. It’s Free!
