In my previous post, I said that one of the best ways to start making real money as an affiliate is to become a vendor and sell your own product. The reasoning behind this is that if you’re selling a product, you can build a valuable list of buyers in a known niche. You can then recommend related products to the members of that list. So having your own product is a great way of building a list that you can market affiliated products to.
Many people at this point will be thinking “I can’t make my own product – that’s why I’m selling as an affiliate”. They’ll maybe stop reading now and look for something else.
But wait! It’s really not that difficult to create your own product, and if you really don’t know where to start, there are plenty of ready-made starting points for you, and a lot of free or low-cost software programs that will help you produce the finished product.
Let us assume that you have chosen your niche and you are ready to create your own product. The easiest products to create are info-products because they are created and distributed entirely dgitally. This means that computers can do all the work for you when it comes to fulfilling orders.
Your choices are now limited to eBooks/Reports, Videos, Audio, and Software. There are a few additional digital products such as images and ring-tones, but it’s probably best to steer clear of those.
Unless you are a programmer or can afford to pay a programmer, we can write off the software idea for the time being.
So it’s really down to an eBook, Video or Audio, or any combination of those three.
Raw material
The first thing you’ll need is the basic information that is going to form the basis of your info-product. If you don’t feel confident enough to write your own, then start from a PLR product, or pay a writer to do it for you.PLR – Private Label Rights
Basically, PLR means you can take the product, rename it, modify it, add your own name as the author etc. It’s text that you can use however you see fit. There are a lot of sites that distribute PLR ebooks. Some are free, and others have monthly subscriptions. Search for whatever suits you best.Now that you have the PLR product, you MUST change it. Why? Because hundreds of other people have picked up the exact same PLR document and will be promoting it. You don’t want to be lost in an ocean of identical documents.
Professional Writers
There are thousands of professional writers who can produce a document or set of articles that you could combine into a single document) for you. Prices and quality vary, so look around for whatever will fit your budget, but also look for recommendations.Modify the PLR Document
First off, change the document’s Title so that it stands out of the crowd. And of course, change the Author to your own name. Alternatively, you could add your name to the existing one to make it look like a collaboration. That could work quite well if the original author is well-known in the field.Read the document and rewrite anything you think needs it. It might be written in a style that you don’t like, or maybe have poor grammar and punctuation.
Bulk out the existing material by inserting additional information, and remove anything that you know to be out-of-date. Doing this gives you the opportunity to promote it with phrases such as “Newly Updated for 2010″, which conveys a feeling that the document is established (and therefore popular), yet still relevant.
Add additional chapters that supplement the rest of the book.
Spell-check the document and get somebody to proof-read it for you.
Convert the document into PDF format and you’re done.
If you sell the product via Clickbank, you will need to create a sales page, thank-you page etc. I’m not going to cover that in this post, but I shall in the future.
Submit your product to the Clickbank Marketplace. There is a one-off fee for becoming a Clickbank vendor, but you can sell numerous products once you have done that.
When your product has been accepted by Clickbank, you will still need to promote it yourself because it will not appear in the Marketplace until you have actually made some sales. You will also need to promote it to affiliates. After all, if you don’t get any affiliates selling it, you’re not going to get the sales. Find affiliate forms to locate interested affiliates.
In addition to, or as an alternative to Clickbank, you could also try one of the other affiliate services, such as Click2Sell. They are very similar to Clickbank, but they will also handle physical products as well as digital ones.

There are a lot of people (and I mean a LOT!) who have tried their hand at online marketing only to end up losing more money than they made. Many took the advice of others that affiliate marketing is the way to go, because you don’t need your own product, don’t necessarily need a website, it is somebody else’s responsibility to fulfil the orders, and you get a nice commission from each sale. If it’s a Clickbank product, the commission can be as high as 75%.
In a nutshell it sounds ideal. You get paid more than half of the purchase price and all you have to do is get people to visit the sales page to buy the product.Unfortunately, that’s where the bubble bursts. Getting people to the sales page is not quite as easy as the professionals make out. If you don’t have a website, the only effective methods of driving traffic to sales pages are paid advertisements such as Google AdWords. You could try article marketing, but most article directories don’t accept affiliate links in articles that you submit.
If you do have a website or blog, you could try posting reviews of the product that you’re trying to sell, but then you have to get traffic to your website or blog. That can be a lot easier if you know about SEO and Pinging etc.
Other possibilities are the social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. You can buy adverts on Facebook and be very specific about your target audience. You can tweet a message to your Twitter followers, but if your followers in turn follow many other people, then your messages can get lost in the sea of tweets that pass through.
So what is the answer to success in Affiliate Marketing? Strangely enough, it involves looking at it from the opposite direction. In other words, make a product of your own and get other people to sell it for you as affiliates.
Ah! But that’s why you became an affiliate – so that you didn’t need your own product. Well, let me tell you, as somebody who has been there – You Need Your Own Product!
It doesn’t have to be a ground-breaking product – just something that is useful to a lot of people and relatively low cost so that they don’t think twice about buying it. It also has to be something that fits in with the niche that you are working in.
Here’s the action plan:
- Get your own product. Use something PLR as a basis to get started, and add value to it. Rewrite sections of it and add more detail where you can.
- Submit your product to Clickbank so that other people can sell it for you.
- Promote the product to affiliates in forums etc.
- Recruit as many affiliates as you can to promote your product.
- Build a list of buyers.
That’s the secret. The list. You’ve heard countless times that the money is in the list. Well if you have a list of people who have bought a particular product, then you know what kind of product they are interested in. You can now promote other, related products to the people on your list.
A word of warning:
Once you have built your list, don’t start flooding them with affiliate links – they’ll unsubscribe very quickly. Build up a rapport with them. Send them related information in emails a couple of times a week, and then from time-to-time, drop in the odd recommended product. If you have gained their trust, they are more likely to buy through your link.
I would say no more than one recommended product per month to begin with until you get a feel for how much you can get away with. And the best way to recommend a product is to discuss a problem that people might experience within the target niche and then suggest the product as a solution.
Once you have established your list, make another product and build another list and start the process over again. Eventually, you will have enough active list members to bring you a decent income. And by the time that happens, you will be so confident about making products, you’ll be able to do it without even thinking about it.

I’ve written about this subject on other blogs, but it’s very important to anyone starting out as a Clickbank affiliate, so I decided to write about it here, too.
If you’re getting into affiliate marketing, one of the most popular places to start is ClickBank. They make it so easy to use, and after 10 years, they have paid out over $1.5 billion in affiliate commissions, so it’s tried and trusted by both vendors and affiliates.
But if you’re a beginner and just taking those first, tentative steps into marketing, you could lose the money that you have earned so far due to Clickbank’s accounting policies. Personally, I lost only $23 because of this, but I know of others who have lost a lot more.
I was a complete newbie to any kind of marketing and I wasn’t really taking it that seriously. I had a good job and any money I earned online was considered a bonus. I started promoting Clickbank products by placing ads on my websites. The sites didn’t receive a lot of traffic, so I wasn’t expecting too much. When I made my first sale, I was over the moon. Getting the second one was a real joy – I thought I’d really got something going.
Unfortunately, my luck was short-lived. The sales stopped. Knowing nothing about marketing, I had no idea how to bring traffic to my site, so I kind of gave up on it. Because the commission that I had earned were below the payment threshold, I didn’t receive anything from Clickbank.
Dormant Account Policy
About 6 months later, I had learned a lot more about online businesses and decided to boost my efforts. I logged on to Clickbank to find products to promote, and was amazed to find the balance of my account was now $0. I looked through the account history and saw that every so often, $1 was deducted from by account until all the money was gone.It turned out that those charges were for a “Dormant account”. In ClickBank’s world, this means an account that has a positive balance, but no transactions for an extended period of time.
I investigated further and found that the following scale of charges are applied:
$1 if the account is dormant for 90 days
$5 if the account is dormant for 180 days
$15 if the account is dormant for 365 daysClickBank pays out at 2-weekly intervals, and it is at those times that the charges are levied.
The charges are applied at every payment time.
So if you account has been dormant for 180 days, you will be charged $5. If your account has still been dormant for 180 or more days 2 weeks later, you will be charged $5 again. And again, and again until your account becomes active again, or your balance reaches $0.Something that I have since discovered though, is that making a sale keeps your account active, even if the buyer subsequently requests a refund. After all, you made the sale – if the buyer doesn’t think the product is worth the money, it’s the vendor’s fault – not yours.
Customer Distribution Requirement
I was annoyed by this loss of commission, but not put off by it. I started again and accrued a lot more commission – enough to exceed the payment threshold. I awaited my first commission payment, but it didn’t arrive.Back in my Clickbank account I noticed the letters CDR against my account balance. So I investigated further, and discovered another part of Clickbank’s accounting policy. CDR stands for Customer Distribution Requirements. It means that your account has to satisfy another set of conditions before funds will be released.
These conditions state that:
Sales must have been made with at least 2 different payment methods selected from Visa, Mastercard and PayPal. Additionally, there must have been sales from at least 5 different credit cards.
Multiple PayPal accounts do not count as different credit cards.So if everyone paid by PayPal, you still wouldn’t get your commission.
Note that the CDR applies only once to your account. After it has been satisfied, subsequent purchases can be made with any of the acceptable methods.
The quickest way to get past the CDR is to promote a product that is so cheap, but so useful, that nobody will think twice about buying it.
I discovered an incredibly simple way of giving by ClickBank account a big kick, which propelled it through the payment threshold, and collected more than enough different credit card payments and PayPal payments along the way.
That incredibly simple idea was created by the renowned ClickBank expert, Harvey Segal. He has produced a FREE report, ClickBank for Newbies, which explains the problems with ClickBank in detail, and shows you how to satisfy the CDR rules. And at the same time, it keeps your account from going dormant.

There are a huge number of people making extremely good income from selling other peoples’ products as affiliates. Many don’t even have a website – they simply set up advertisements, such as Google Ads, which link through to the vendor sites via their affiliate link. The only costs and effort involve setting up the ads, so it’s a good business model for anyone who doesn’t want to get involved with websites, domains, hosting etc.
On the other face of the coin, who is the real winner when it comes to affiliate marketing? Even if a product offers 75% commission (the maximum that Clickbank allow) to the affiliate, it is still the vendor who stands to gain the most. By using an army of affiliates to promote the product, the vendor is enjoying two main benefits; he is leveraging the efforts of other people to promote his product, and he is transferring the major costs of promotion to the affiliates.
Let’s look at an example.
A vendor has a product which sells for $48 and on average costs $2 per unit to promote.
He sells 1000 units and makes $48,000 less £2,000 costs = $46,000.However, if he sets up an affiliate program, paying 75% to the affiliate, so they get $36 per sale.
Let’s say he attracts 10 affiliates who can each sell 1000 units.His affiliates each sell 1000 units, so they make $36,000, but they also have to bear the costs of promotion of those 1000 units, which amounts to $2,000. Each affiliate makes £34,000.
The vendor receives only 25% of the sale price, which is $12 per copy. However, he doesn’t bear any of the costs of promotion, so that $12 is all his.
Additionally, he has 10 affiliates who have each sold 1000 units, so in total, they have sold 10,000 units. This means that the vendor earns 10,000 x $12 = $120,000 from the sale of his product. That’s nearly 3 times the amount he would have made selling on his own, even though he has given away 75% of the purchase price to his sales people. If he’d set the commission rate lower (66%, 50% etc), his profit would have been even higher.
And the beauty of it is that all his affiliates did all the marketing work.So does it pay to be the Affiliate or the Vendor? Well in the above example, I’m sure the affiliates are very happy with the $34,000 they made. The answer then, is that it pays either way, but wouldn’t you rather be in the position of Vendor, who leverages the efforts of the affiliates, yet earns a lot more? Of course you would.
