Looking at my Clickbank Affiliate Analytics, over the past few weeks I have seen a gradual increase in the number of Hops via my affiliate links, due to more active promotion. Normally, I would be delighted by this, but in reality, my reaction to the statistics has been one of disappointment.
The Analytics view can display various stages in the purchasing cycle:
- Hops. This is a count of the number of times a visitor has clicked on one of my affiliate links to arrive at the sales page.
- Order Form Impressions.A count of the number of times that visitors have clicked through the Buy button to the order form.
- Order Form Submits. The number of times the Order Form has been submitted. Note that this doesn’t equate to the number of purchases because a payment might fail.
- Initial Sales. An initial count of the number of sales made. This may differ from the number of gross sales due to refunds etc.
There are a few others, but they are not relevant here.
What I have begun to find a little baffling is that the number of Hops is considerably higher than the number of Order Form Impressions. In some cases there have been countless Hops but zero orders. Surely if a product is attracting that much attention, it should have gained a number of Order Form Impressions! So I set out to find out why.
Too Expensive?
Was the product on offer too expensive for most people to consider buying?
I checked a lot of the sales pages and found the prices to be fairly average.Bad Sales Copy?
Perhaps the sales copy was so bad that people decided not to buy.
Again, the copy didn’t seem too bad. Not bad enough to put too many buyers off.Eureka!
Then I noticed that there was something in common with most of the pages that were getting a lot of hops but no sales. That thing was a pop-up window containing a squeeze page with an offer of a free report.Why would that affect sales?
- It breaks one of the fundamental rules of marketing. The pop-up side-tracks a visitor who might otherwise have gone on to buy the product.
- Having obtained a free item, the visitor decides not to purchase the product after all.
There could be a genuine reason why the vendor does this.
He wants to build a list and adds the squeeze page in order to do so. There are better ways than this to build a list as a Clickbank vendor.Or is there something a little more sinister going on here?
Let’s say a visitor finds your affiliate link and follows it to the sales page. Clickbank registers that you have made the referral, so if the visitor goes on to purchase, you earn your commission.
But the visitor is distracted by the pop-up squeeze page. He sees an attractive offer for a free report, ebook, course etc., and goes for it. He enters his details in the squeeze page and goes to check his email for a download link. He follows that link and goes to pick up the free product – maybe being given bonuses and/or exposed to a One-Time-Offer (OTO).
By the time he has picked up all this free stuff and maybe purchased an OTO, he has forgotten about the original product, or decides not to buy it because he has bought something else. Consequently, the browser window containing the original sales page gets closed.
You’ve lost your commission because the visitor didn’t buy. Oh well! Chalk that one up to experience.
But wait! The vendor has captured the details of the visitor and has him on a mailing list. Now he can send that visitor an email selling the original product via a different page that isn’t via ClickBank.
You have unwittingly built that vendor’s list, and failed to earn any commission while doing so.
There is the possibility that the visitor will continue to purchase the original product via your link, but the chances have been considerably reduced.
Whatever the reason for adding this distracting pop-up, you as an affiliate are likely to lose your commission. It’s not in the spirit of ClickBank or Affiliate Marketing for that matter.
So if you’re an affiliate, take care to check out the sales page before you promote the link. It could be designed to get round the affiliate payment system. As a result, the vendor makes more money and builds a list while you make no money at all.

If you have ever bought a downloadable ebook or video package online, the chances are that when you arrive at the download page, you will see a number of “unannounced bonuses”. These are usually free products that are related to the item that you have just purchased. The whole concept of these bonuses is part of building a rapport with your customers. They buy a product from you and you get more than you bargained for. It makes you feel better about buying the product (if it was quite expensive, you might now feel justified in buying it because of all the extra content you have received).
Feeling good about something you have bought usually reflects on the vendor – you feel good about buying from that vendor. This in turn builds trust and you are more likely to buy from them again, knowing that they usually over-deliver.
Keeping up with The Joneses
Now let’s look at it from the vendor’s point of view, because if you’re running or starting a business, you become the vendor. You might be thinking it would be a good idea to include a number of unannounced bonuses with your products, and you’d be right – you also need to build a rapport with, and gain trust from your customers. Looking at it a little more cynically, you might fell obliged to include bonuses, just to keep up with the competition in the online world.Bonus Material
So now you need a source of bonus material. Perhaps you found it difficult enough to get your first product together, so you’re not looking forward to creating more. Well of course, you don’t have to – there’s plenty of MRR (Master Resale Rights) and PLR (Private Label Rights) material out there that you could use.
These are sometimes available for free, but the better-quality stuff needs to be purchased.
Now wouldn’t it be good if instead of paying for your bonus material, you got paid for it? Believe it or not, it IS possible.I recently bought a package that, like so many others, came with 5 unannounced bonuses. The first item on the list of bonuses was an ebook, which I simply downloaded from the vendor’s site. The other 4 items, however, were all affiliate links to other free products. Obviously, affiliates don’t make money from free products, but they do get a cut from the OTOs (One-Time-Offers) that are presented to the customers when they sign up.
So, if you are an affiliate for any free products that pay out on the OTO, or you have other related products that you giveaway, why not use them as a source of “unannounced bonuses”? If you know any other marketers who work in a related field, why not strike up a joint venture with them to promote each other’s product as unannounced bonuses?
Finding free products with affiliate programs is not difficult – you’ve probably signed up for some yourself. Did you ever use those affiliate links after you signed up? Probably not. What a great way to resurrect them and potentially make some money.
Why Unannounced?
You often see sales pages offering bonus items, so why include unannounced bonuses?
There are a few good reasons:- The customer already feels good about getting the advertised bonuses, but to be given even more once they’ve paid makes them feel even better. It all helps to build the relationship with the customer.
- They might be added at the last minute – especially if they are part of a JV with another marketer. They can be added to or removed from the download page at will. It’s likely that the sales page will be cached by the search engines, but the download page will not, so the download page can be changed at any time without causing any problems.
- You might not want your competition to know that you are giving them away – especially if it is one of your own products that you are testing. They’ll find out eventually, of course, but by then it might be too late.
Marketers don’t give away additional products because they are feeling generous – it’s because they know they get more sign-ups and sales if they do. Start delivering bonuses and “unannounced” bonuses with your products and see what difference it makes.

As an affiliate, you’re always dancing to the tune of the Vendor. If he cancels the affiliate program, you’ve lost an income stream (hopefully it’s not your only income stream!). If he reduces the commission paid, your income can drop severely. As an affiliate, you’re definitely not in control.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, every time you make a sale through your affiliate link, you’re adding to the Vendor’s list. You recommend the product to the customer, and then the Vendor takes over. That customer becomes just another ship that passes in the night.
It gets worse! Not only have you added a customer to your Vendor’s list, he can now direct-mail that customer with promotions of other products. If he releases a new product, he’ll mail his list directly before opening up an affiliate program, so there is no chance that as an affiliate, you will make that future sale to the same customer.
You might argue that there are always more customers available – hundreds or thousands of people come online for the first time every day. That’s true, but it’s a lot easier to sell to a list than to attract new customers.
The conventional Affiliate mechanism doesn’t include the opportunity to build your own list. You direct customers to the sales page and your job is done. If the sales page does its job, the sale is made and you get your commission.
You may well have heard of “Super-Affiliates”. They are the people who make hundreds of affiliate sales every week and earn a very good living from it. How do you reach the status of Super-Affiliate? By building lists. By capturing the details of interested parties, the Super-Affiliate builds his lists. He knows what the people on his list are interested in, so he can target them with related products. But how does the Super-Affiliate get people to sign up to his lists while directing the customers to a slaes page?
The answer is simple. By offering a free gift that is related to the product that he is promoting, and there are different approaches to doing this.
The Bribe
The affiliate writes a review of the product and posts it on his website, blog etc. He then tells visitors to his site that if they buy the product through his link and forward the confirmation email to him, he will send them a free gift.
The customer makes the purchase and sends the affiliate the required proof by email. The affiliate can then capture the customer’s name and email address, knowing that they are not only interested in the product, but they actually went ahead and bought it.This approach tells the buyer that he is an affiliate and that he will be making a commission from the sale, and that puts off some buyers. However, the method has been used quite successfully by some of the top marketers, so don’t rule it out.
The Freebie Up-Front
This is a very similar approach except that the free gift is offered as an incentive to sign up to a list. After signing up, the visitor is sent to a thank-you page. On that page, they are then told about the product being promoted. In fact, the thank-you page could even be the product sales page.
The disadvantage with this method is that the visitor could take the free gift and not go on to buy the product. However, you do have them on your mailing list, so it’s possible that you make more money from future promotions direct to your list. Alternatively, you could defer promoting the product to them at his point and use your autoresponder’s messages to sell it to them.Personally, I prefer this second method, It’s a bit more subtle than the first, and it gives you the opportunity to start building a relationship with that person before you try to sell them something.
Free products
There are a lot of MRR and PLR ebooks, reports and software available on all manner of subjects. It’s quite easy to find some suitable free gifts to offer to your visitors. Even better – create your own – it will be unique.Autoresponders
If you’re going to build a list, you’ll need an autoresponder. It’s possible to build a list without one, but with the effort involved in maintaining it, you’ll begin to regret not using an autoresponder.
The best and by far the easiest to use autoresponder in my opinion is Aweber. I started out with Aweber, moved to two others and ended up switching back to Aweber because I found the others too confusing or quirky.
Aweber are constantly adding new features and refining their existing ones, and you can set up as many lists as you want. If you don’t have an autoresponder, I truly recommend that you go for Aweber.
